So what do they sell at Costco?

5
Costco Products

For the opening of Costco North Lakes thousands of people came through the doors and cars lined up for as far as the eye can see. People have come from all over South East Queensland to be here for the opening and to collect their Membership cards.

Many people had never been to a Costco Warehouse and did not know what to expect and there certainly were some surprises in store.

The superstore sells everyday items for the home, dining table, back yard, personal care, adventure and sports. Buying in bulk really is the order of the day so if you thought 300 metres of Glad Wrap was not quite enough, you can get it in rolls of just over half a kilometre at Costco. Or perhaps try a kilogram of asparagus for tonights pasta.

You can have your eyes and ears tested and potentially be walking away with a new set of glasses and a hearing aid.

But what we loved was the variety of local seafood and ready made catering platters.

You don’t need to be a Costco member to browse, but if you see something you like you will need to join before you purchase :)

Costco North Lakes opening hours are;
Monday to Friday from 10:00am – 8:30pm
Saturday from 9:00am – 5:00pm
Sunday 10:00am – 6:00pm

Address: 17-39 Cook St, North Lakes QLD 4509

The Roar Initiative

0
The Roar Initiative

Professor Jellybean business owners Marissa Ward and Sherry Bruce, founded The Roar Initiative out of a wish to empower and inspire youth into worthwhile, community oriented projects and initiatives.

The name “Roar Initiative” for the organisation, was inspired by a an early morning visit to India’s Kanha National Park. Two tigers, off in the distance were silhouettes in the mist, until they roared and it was a sound not to be forgotten!

Youth Club Members are the local youth champions for The Roar Initiative. These young volunteers are empowered through The Roar Initiative to actively participate and encourage others as local and global community citizens into responsible endeavors. This means working as an ambassador of The Roar Initiative to provide a rich learning experience to other young people and engage them in environmentally sustainable and socially responsible activities.

At both levels, the organisation wants the voice, messages and actions of our youth to leave an unforgettable and positive impact on people and the planet. It is an opportunity for them to ROAR.

The Roar Initiative Inc. currently has an opportunity of a lifetime for an ambitious and hard-working aspiring Youth Club Member from the North Lakes area. If you would like to encourage and inspire other local youth in worthwhile programs and be a part of The Roar Initiative’s creative team, here’s your chance. This person will also have the opportunity to join The Roar Initiative in Borneo to actively participate in an Orangutan conservation project and to contribute to the global community.

Locally, the team meets once a week at The Space, where a unique learning experience, from various mentors, are provided to its youth members.

They have been learning video production skills with an aim to create a video to promote the rich environment of the Pumistone passage. They are pursuing various art forms that foster environmental awareness and they are learning how to create and implement community projects to reconnect children with nature.

The Roar Initiative team recently launched its monthly free community event called Nature Tales. This event provides fun and engaging nature activities for young children within the region’s nature rich parks. The next Nature Tales event will be held in the North Lakes area. Keep an eye on the Roar website for announcements – http://roar.org.au/calendar/.

Nature Tales - The Roar Initiative

The Roar Initiative is looking for a youth member in year 9, 10, 11 or 12 that wants to learn about their world and how they can contribute as a socially and environmentally responsible citizen, so if you think that you fit that bill please contact Sherry Bruce on (07) 54 977 941.

Currently, the team members are working on bringing an epic festival called Science in the Park to the North Lakes community in October.

Costco membership – Have you got one?

6
Costco North Lakes Qld

Costco North Lakes

The Costco information and sign up outlet on Discovery Drive has been experiencing increased traffic since the announcement that it is set to close it’s doors next week before Costco North Lakes big opening on May 29. This weekend the temporary office will be open from 9:00am – 5:00pm for those wishing to shop who have yet to get a membership.

After the Discovery Drive office closure, there remains the opportunity to sign up at the membership counter at the warehouse, prior to the big opening on May 29.

The planned opening of Costco North Lakes warehouse has proved a driver of local commercial investment and is a significant inducement for other large national and international corporations to claim their footprint in South East Queensland.

Costco Membership Office

With current heavy fluctuations in fuel prices, it is not only hoped that the introduction of the Costco fuel pumps will broadly reduce local fuel prices, but also provide less volatility.

Regardless of whether you want to buy fuel or warehouse goods, if you intend to shop at Costco, you will need to hold a membership card.

Who are ComLink? Volunteers needed.

0
ComLink Volunteers

ComLink North Lakes is up, operational and ready to assist our community.

ComLink is a not-for-profit organisation and charity providing personalised transport services and care to the aged and disabled for social outings, shopping and medical appointments.

Thanks to federal Home and Community Care funding, the long established Sunshine Coast community transport organisation now provide these much needed services in the greater Moreton Bay and North Brisbane regions. They are also currently undertaking expansion into Bundaberg, Ipswich, Cairns, Townsville and satellite sites in Gympie, Childers and Gin Gin.

It is recognised that living a balanced and fulfilling life is intrinsic to our health and wellbeing, so ComLink’s transport services are not limited to medical appointments but also transport clients to shopping centres for social outings, hair appointments to maintain their social inclusion. They will even provide staff to assist with shopping requirements.

ComLink drivers have basic first aid skills, have undergone a police check and hold a blue card, as well as receiving training in policy, induction, driver fatigue and sometimes specialty areas such as caring for someone with dementia.

ComLink averages provides hundreds of trips per week in the Moreton Bay Region and due to a rising demand for our services in the North Lakes and surrounding areas, ComLink are in regular need of volunteer drivers to help transport clients and be involved in the community.

The North Lakes division drivers predominantly undertake medical transport services for Queensland Health including hospital transfers, admissions and discharges, as well as some trips for the transport disadvantaged.

If you would like to help people in need in your community you might consider becoming a ComLink volunteer. You should hold a current small or medium vehicle license, preferably for bus, but car license holders will be considered as well.

Steve Mason, a volunteer driver and long-term resident of North Lakes said the thing he enjoys most about volunteering is meeting people. “I have always believed in a sense of community and by volunteering, I personally get back a lot more than I give,” says Steve.

Many of ComLink’s 3,800+ clients rely on ComLink as their only means of transport. “Everyone working for ComLink is considered family. The level of commitment is completely up to them,” says Ms Adra, ComLink Chief Executive.

If you are interested in becoming a ComLink volunteer, please contact Mobility Manager Robyn Elkojje on 1300 761 011 or visit their website – ComLink Volunteers.

Wray Organic Market & Cafe Opening

0
Wray Organic Owners

Today the Wray Organic Market and Cafe opens it’s doors to the public at 23 Discovery Drive, North Lakes with the grand opening being held on Saturday, 5th April at 10am.

Deborah Wrays’ enthusiasm and passion as the founder of Wray Organic Market is clear in the way she describes her stores. She is rightfully proud of a very diverse range of Certified Organic foodstuffs, which has been a driver in the success of the business.

It was wonderful to hear the story of the beginnings of the now 9 branch franchise. Deb (right), pictured with North Lakes store owner Tanya Cunningham, opened her first store together with husband Gary at Palm Beach on the Gold Coast in 2005.

Deb was professionally recommended to eliminate as many chemicals and pesticides from her families diet as possible, but found from first hand experience that there was no single place to buy a good range of organic foods and out of this, the idea for Wray Organic Market was born. With a particular focus on foodstuffs, Deb found that there was a real demand for her products.

The Wray Organic owners stock only Organically Certified products but within that framework, also regularly review products and suppliers, considering every ingredient and whether or not it has has been grown / cultivated / manufactured to ethical standards.

As well as quality produce and products, Wray Organic Market also strives to provide affordability, which is a mantra rarely touted in the organic sector.

Just some of the things you can look forward to at Wray Organic Market from today are fresh organic fruit and vegetable juices served over the counter, organic coffee at the Wray Organic Cafe, a range of fruits and vegetables, cooking ingredients, meat, poultry and fish, breads, cold-pressed oils, yoghurt, ice-cream, personal-care products, books and much more. You really must come in-store to see that you really can get everything you might expect at your regular supermarket and more, organically.

Wray Organic Market and Cafe issue a monthly Newsletter detailing all their specials and latest news. Visit the Wray Organic Market Newsletter page on their website to subscribe.

We congratulate and wish all the very best to store owners Nathan and Tanya and be sure to support them on Grand Opening day Saturday, 5th April from 10am. Visit the business listing for Wray Organic Market North Lakes.

Mango Hill Markets bigger and better

0
Mango Hill Markets

On Saturday 29th March, the second Mango Hill Markets was held with a wonderful turnout by both stallholders and patrons. 70+ stallholders were involved showing their wares, services, performances, rides and games.

The event was hosted in the grounds of St. Benedicts Primary School at St Benedicts Close, Mango Hill and was a credit to the organisers.

The market was under threat from rain as it has been a very wet week, but thankfully the sun was shining, if only for the duration of the markets. Well done to the organisers for diverting the stormclouds. We look forward to many more market days.

Stallholders and exhibitors included the Institute of Modern Tae Kwon Do, Lil Shimmeys Dance & Fitness, Grasshopper Soccer, GameOn Family Fun Centre, Berry Good Jam and Chutney, Lime Physical Therapy, Fitness Matters Gym, Vivace School of Music, Kerobi Crystals, Wray Organic Market and Cafe and Click With You Photography.

We have posted some pictures of the day below and we look forward to keeping you updated on future Mango Hill Markets.

Mango Hill Village Welcome Sign

0
Mango Hill Village Welcome Sign

After 10 years of continuous lobbying to the local council by the Mango Hill Progress Association for a “Welcome to Mango Hill Village” sign, the installation of this new sign on Thursday 20th March is  a tribute to the perseverance of a community.

Located on Kinsellas Road West, just along from Light Horse Court, this new sign reflects the semi-rural history and bush setting of this small village with it’s own bush belt, defining it’s character and community values amidst the rapidly developing satellite city of North Lakes.

Your comments on the sign and the chosen design are welcome.
