Dear Alice – Unlucky in Love

Dear-Alice-Unlucky-in-love

Dear Alice,
I’ve been single for around 3 years now and I am really ready to be in a relationship again. I have been doing the whole Tinder thing and whilst I’ve had lots of first dates, and even some short relationships, I haven’t been able to find the right guy. I’m beginning to worry that I will never find love again.
– Lucy

Hi Lucy,
Firstly, I’m sorry to hear that you have been unlucky in love. It’s interesting that we are constantly connected by technology and yet it has been reported that people today are the loneliest they have been in modern history. At the end of the day, all we want is to feel understood and be connected with other people. If you have been trying to meet people and have not been successful, perhaps your method is not working for you. I think that when you have a certain idea of what ‘Mr Right’ will look like, you may be blind to multiple opportunities along the way. Instead of focusing on meeting him right now, perhaps it would be beneficial to explore your own social hobbies. When you take the pressure off yourself and start enjoying socialising, you may be invited into worlds you had previously dismissed. ‘Mr Right’ may not be sitting on his phone looking at dating apps, he might be at a family BBQ or hiking with a group of friends. When you take your focus off dating, and shift it onto genuinely connecting with people, you may meet other people that could lead you to ‘Mr Right’. Sure, you may not think that attending your work colleague’s niece’s birthday party is going to be fruitful; but perhaps you meet a new friend that invites you to another event where you meet a nice guy. Step out of that tunnel vision and look around you, there are amazing people everywhere. Lastly, I encourage you to be friendly and confident. Say hi to people while you’re out, you never know who you’re standing next to!

Light Intersections to Replace Roundabouts on Memorial and Discovery Drive

0
Roundabouts-to-lights

Two intersections along Discovery Drive, including the roundabout at the corner of Discovery Drive and Memorial Drive will be turned into traffic light intersections.

This project will improve road safety and traffic flow in the area which is bounded directly by two major local schools, North Lakes State College and The Lakes College and two child care centres.

Additional car lanes, bike lanes and pedestrian crossings will be built, making for a safer journey for everyone, whether by foot or vehicle.

This has been a very busy and congested area at peak times and this is considered to be a necessary project, required to cater for the past and projected growth of the area.

Affected roads will remain open during construction and the project is expected to continue until at least the middle of 2018.

Karen Johns Awarded Moreton Bay Citizen of the Year

0
Karen-Johns-comforts-dv-victim

The Citizen of the Year Award recognises an individual for their outstanding contribution to the Moreton Bay community during the preceding year, or over numerous years. The winner is an inspirational role model for the community and demonstrates a continued commitment to their field.

The 2018 recipient of the award is Karen Johns, founder of Dare Formal Wear, a not-for-profit charity helping victims of domestic violence.

While appreciating that her hard work has been acknowledged, she knows she wouldn’t have been able to make it happen without the help of her volunteers.

“I  accept the award on behalf of DARE’s volunteers and the community support, without it, nothing would happen. Well done! “

Karen launched DARE back in 2014, after living through a domestically violent relationship herself. She felt like there wasn’t anyone there for her and so began her path to what DARE is today.

The concept came to her through a variety of life experiences, one leading to the other. The experience that really set her on her path was when she was received some donated formal dresses. Not knowing what to do with them, she pushed it to the back of her mind. It wasn’t until someone suggested she could sell them online whilst she was trying to assist a woman in need of housing that the idea sprung to life.

Karen is a qualified teacher, with previous pastoral experience and a passion for empowering women. Her goal for DARE has been to fill the gap to connect domestic violence victims to specialist services, whilst offering her unwavering support, regardless of the victim’s decisions.

The formal wear store boasts some of the most stunning gowns around, with not only formal dresses available but wedding and bridesmaids dresses, as well as some more casual dresses for sale. You can complete your look with shoes of every colour and size, jewelry, handbags hairpieces and even race day hats!

DARE generously donates formal wear to teenagers doing it tough, to make sure they look a million bucks after all of their hard work during their school years.

Big Local would like to congratulate Karen and all of the Australia Day Award recipients!

If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic or family violence you can reach out to Karen via DARE’S Facebook page – www.facebook.com/dareformalwear

Saving for Your First Home, Listen Up

0
First-Home-Buyers-Initiative

Saving for your first home deposit can sometimes feel overwhelming – but thanks to the introduction of the ‘First Home Super Saver Scheme’, locals will be able to save for their deposit faster.

First-Home-Buyers-Initiative-image

“This is great news for locals; instead of paying tax, they will be able to salary sacrifice up to $15,000 per year straight into their superannuation”, Luke Howarth MP, Federal Member for Petrie said.

The growing trend is that Australians are entering the housing market later in life than previous generations. Due to house prices being high, difficulty saving a deposit has been an issue for many when it comes to trying to crack the housing market.

“For example someone earning $60,000 will be able to salary sacrifice $15,000, bringing their taxable income to $45,000 per year – saving them $5,759 in taxes over two years”, Mr Howarth said.

For most people, the First Home Super Saver Scheme could boost their savings that they can put towards a deposit by at least 30%, when compared with savings through a standard deposit account.

“It’s also like a forced savings plan as individuals cannot withdraw their money for any other reason than buying their first home or retiring”.

From 1 July 2018, first home buyers will be able to withdraw voluntary superannuation contributions they’ve made since 1 July 2017, along with any interest they have earnt to help buy their first home.

“The bottom line is, this is a super saver scheme; rather than paying tax on your heard earnt dollars, it will go towards your first home deposit” said Mr Howarth.

If you would like more information about the First Home Super Saver Scheme, contact Luke Howarth’s office on 07 3284 8008 or email luke.howarth.mp@aph.gov.au.

Christmas-recipes-featured-image

Christmas is a time of sharing. It can also be an incredibly stressful time, especially for those left with the responsibility of organising everything! We’ve compiled some delicious Christmas starter recipes, that will make you the star of the day!

Christmas-recipe-shopping-list

Champagne Sangria

Champagne-SangriaPut 1/2 nip of Bacardi in a well chilled champagne glass. Fill glasses with equal amounts of chilled pink lady apple juice and Champagne.

Watermelon and Raspberry Cooler

Watermelon-Raspberry-CoolerPlace 4 cupfuls of watermelon flesh in a blender with 150g frozen raspberries and 1/3 cup vodka. Blend until smooth. Top up with lemonade.

Christmas Shortbread Cookies

Shortbread-CookiesPlace butter, sugar, and vanilla in bowl and beat with an electric mixer until light and creamy. Add sifted flours and beat until mixture starts to form a ball. Wrap mixture in gladwrap and refrigerate for 15 minutes. Roll mixture to 5mm thickness and use a Christmas cutter to cut out shapes. Bake in a 160 degree oven until light brown. Melt chocolate in a bowl in the microwave for 2 minutes, in 30 second increments, stirring each time. Pour melted chocolate in a ziplock bag and snip a little off one corner. Drizzle over cookies.

Prawn Arancini

Prawn-AranciniHeat butter and olive oil in a saucepan. Add garlic and leek and cook until leek has softened. Add rice and wine to saucepan, stir until liquid is reduced. Stir in stock and simmer for 15 min until liquid is absorbed and rice is tender. Stir in prawns, lemon rind and parsley and cook for a further 2 min. Remove from heat and stir in parmesan. Transfer to a bowl and refrigerate for 15 minutes. Place flour, egg and breadcrumbs into separate bowls. Roll the cooled risotto into 12 balls. Toss each ball into flour, shake off excess. Coat in egg then roll into the breadcrumbs. Heat oil in a deep saucepan and deep fry for 3-4 minutes each. Serve with aioli on the side. This recipe is also good with either flaked salmon or trout in place of the prawns.

Italian Cobloaf

Italian-Cobloaf-RecipeCut the top third from the cob loaf. Scoop out the bread inside (in one piece if possible), leaving a 2cm thick wall. Cut top and base of cobloaf into smaller portions. Place all pieces of cobloaf on a baking tray. Spray base of cobloaf, along with the other smaller portions with olive oil and cook in 160 degree oven for 10 min or until crisp. Cook salami and garlic in a saucepan for 3 minutes. Add olives, sundried tomatoes, tomato paste, cream cheese and grated cheese and stir until melted. Add cream cheese mixture to the base of cob loaf.

Dear Alice

Christmas isn’t merry for everyone……

Christmas-isnt-merry-for-everyone

Dear Alice,
Every year the whole family goes to my sisters for Christmas day. My partner and kids are worried about going because it always ends in tears. We want to do the big family lunch thing but everyone tends to drink too much and fight over old family drama. I don’t know what to do. Help!
– Sandy

Hi Sandy,
It’s a common assumption that Christmas brings joy but for a lot of families coming together might not always be for the best. Preparing for the day is enough to stress anyone out, not to mention sitting around without much else to do than argue over Grandma’s will. Firstly, you need to create a plan and inform your partner and kids of how it is going to play out. Lay the ground work early. Let your sister and family know that you can only stay for a few hours because you are going to visit a friend that lives far away. Have a set time that you must leave by; this will make leaving on the day easier. Next, if you can summon the courage on the day, Speak up! Make a speech and reflect on how important your family is to you. At the end of the speech, state that you want everyone to be happy and ask that they set aside their differences for the day and avoid those nasty topics. Lastly, try some practical tactics. Like playing board games and making a seasonal cocktail for everyone with only half-strength alcohol. Diverting people’s attention and lowering the alcohol level could add a few extra hours of peace. Lastly, if the traditional Christmas plan isn’t working out perhaps it is time to consider a destination holiday for yourself, partner and children.
Best of Luck,
Stay Sane.

Holiday-Camping-Tips

– Always take plenty of fresh drinking water. A lot of campsites only offer non-potable water, which is fine for bathing and extinguishing campfires. If you need to use the water for drinking, it MUST be boiled for a minimum of ten minutes.
– Not all campsites allow campfires, so it is best to check beforehand. It is also advisable to check whether there are any current fire bans in place.
– Bring firewood. Often you will see roadside signs with local residents selling pre-cut wood. It is ILLEGAL to collect wood (even dead branches) in National Parks and you could face a hefty fine if caught! Campfires must be contained and extinguished properly with water. Wildfires can start from embers. Be responsible!
– Ensure you deflate your tyres for beach driving, around 16psi is the standard. Check the tides guide!
– 50+ Sunscreen, Bushmans 40 deet (insect repellant), a fully stocked first aid kit, a pair of thongs for showering, torches and a packet of baby wipes are absolute essentials.
– Do not feed the native wildlife! Ensure all food is secured and away from the reach of all wildlife or you may find it all gone whilst you are away from the campsite or sleeping.
– It pays to look around for ant nests and insect holes prior to pitching tents and gazebos.
– Arrive at your campsite while there is still plenty of daylight, setting up camp can be quite time consuming and setting up in the dark isn’t as fun as it might sound.
– Some campsites don’t offer rubbish disposal, pack some garbage bags and make sure your campsite has no rubbish laying around before leaving.
– Lay a ground sheet (most tents come with one) or a tarp at the entrance to the tent and make it a no shoe zone. This prevents a lot of dirt inside the tent and makes for a more comfortable sleep.
– It’s a good idea to leave the netting on the tent entrance zipped up at all times, except for entering and exiting, unless you want to share a bed with snakes, spiders and mosquitoes!
– Make a list of what you intend to pack but bear in mind that you’ll likely still forget something! Don’t forget the coffee!
– Check yourself for ticks!
– Enjoy the serenity!

Himalayan Salt Promotes Good Health

0
Himalayan-Salt-Zen-Chi-Natural-Therapies

Himalayan rock salt comes from salt deposits in the Himalayan mountain range.

It can be used as a healthier replacement to regular table salt or even as a source of ionized air.

The Human Body and Salt
Salt is as essential to the body as water is. The body requires salt daily to maintain proper functioning in the areas of water absorption, cell communication and metabolic processes. Increasing the quality of salt consumed will provide enhanced vitality to these crucial processes and enhance health, wellness and energy levels.

About Himalayan Rock Salt
Himalayan crystal salt is pristine due to its formation in ancient salt lakes. It is hand-mined from underground deposits in the Himalayas. The salt contains the same trace elements that are found in the human body, which makes it a nutritional powerhouse. There are 92 trace elements and Himalayan rock salt contains 84 of these. No other type of salt contains as many minerals.

Some Benefits and Uses
– Improve air quality by reducing air pollution, airborne dust particles, and airborne bacteria and viruses
– Reduce symptoms of asthma, allergies, bronchitis, sinusitis, and other respiratory diseases
– Reduce stress
– Improve concentration
– Relieve headaches and migraines
– Reduce feelings of fatigue and insomnia
– Helps balance indoor electromagnetic radiation from electronic devices such as computers, televisions and cell phones

Five Ways to Build Your Kid’s Confidence Through Art these Christmas Holidays

0
Painting-Classes-for-kids-tailored-artworks

Art is a natural obsession for children as soon as they can grasp a crayon and scrawl on your wall but how can YOU use their inner genius to improve your home décor and their sense of self-worth and outer confidence?

As a customised Artwork Specialist, here are my 5 tips:

1. Make it big: Children bring home school or art classes all the time but in my experience, it’s rare that they brag about it. So, find a deserving wall, measure its proportions and buy a canvas to match its proportion and scale. Here’s the rule: big spaces need bigger shapes, bolder colours and tones; smaller spaces need smaller shapes of bright colour.

2. Make it quality: Quality makes enormous difference to art. A lesser quality canvas makes paints look shoddy no matter what, so invest in custom-made, which is my preference every time, or go to the art store and buy the dearest brand. Invest in professional acrylics; I use Atelier Interactive myself, not school grade and you’ll get true colour with a long lasting, UV Stable, semi gloss finish. You always get what you pay for when it comes the materials in art and yes, get it framed!

3. Paint it in your décor colours: Paint your artwork with your kids in the colours sampled from your room. Add white (tinting), grey (toning) and black (shading) to your colours to make your space more sophisticated and exciting.

4. Use different tools: Kids will ask for constant change of colour and tool. Change your colours too randomly during the painting process and you’ll end up with a mess but you can change tools to achieve varying marks from tooth brushes, giant and small brushes, sponges, rag, sticks and fingers for an interactive days fun!

5. Let them sign it! For kids as young as 18 months old, I like them to sign their artwork with their hand print while older children can write their name. If your artwork is successful and others love it, you will be amazed at how frequently they will drag visitors to the precious location and proudly show off their masterpiece and signature.

Kids-painting-classes-tailored-artworks

This is theirs, they created it and it’s an excellent confidence booster that, done right, might become a family heirloom and even, grace their adult home years from now, still look great and have relevance… and that’s really what this is all about. So design your artwork from the start to create relevance down the track and your hard work will always be loved.

How to Take Great Holiday Photos!

0
how-to-take-good-holiday-photos-Greg-Coomb

It’s Christmas and Holiday photos season, a time to create special memories that will last you forever!

Firstly you will need a camera, any camera! Over the next few monthly issues, I will talk more about camera options. This issue, we will explore ways of creating a Christmas Season element to a photo, allowing your photo to tell a story about a moment in time that can never be repeated.

I feel the best images are the candid photos. I like the candid photos of the little girl with her attention elsewhere, the tip here is to have your camera preset and focused for the quick snap. This photo tells me it is Christmas lunch, a cool shady spot, she liked Dora at that time and red being the dominant colour. Hence a moment in time that can never be repeated.

How-to-take-great-Holiday-photos-Greg-Cooomb

Another candid scenario is of people doing things, like someone carrying the cooked lunch out to the table. They normally have a look of pride and achievement and confidence, which give an un-selfconscious quality to a picture.

Some moments, like gathering to open Christmas gifts, are filled with opportunities like no other, emotion, excitement, anticipation and joy. Be ready for the reactions of the person that gave the gift as well.

At times you can get spontaneous results by being a step ahead with your camera, when ice cream comes to the table, be ready to shoot the happy kids faces.

Another option is taking the photos when people are natural, a simple way is to have your camera ready and call out the persons name, hence a surprise look into the camera lens and snap you have a great photo.

Holiday activities are awesome time to get some photos, beaches, parks and the road trip make awesome backdrops to memories.

Kids playing in a park, riding a bike, building sand castles at the beach can be so much fun to photograph, another tip is set your camera on the self-timer, so you can be in the photo too.

I hope some of these are practical tips are an insight into how to tell a story. This will inspire you to get out behind your camera.
Finally, one last tip, this year photos can be used to make next years Christmas cards!

I would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas!
