Ikea North Lakes and Westfield expansion on ice

The planned Ikea North Lakes store

Eagerly awaited by the entire region, the North Lakes Ikea store, previously earmarked for completion sometime in 2014, is being rescheduled. It is now “a few years, or a couple of years away” as reported in the Courier Mail, because of the complexity of the project with having two major stores (Ikea and Westfield) in such proximity.

Ikea North Lakes Store

Westfield North Lakes planned expansion, incorporating an eight-screen cinema and 100 retail stores, is also delayed, due to Moreton Bay Council and Westfield wrangling over the potential cost / or not, of parking.

Commencement dates for both of these projects presently appear to  be “unknown” (Jan 2014).

Update May 2014 – Ikea are once more keen to progress the North Lakes store and hope to open their doors to the public by late 2016. The timeline of the build is however totally dependant on Moreton Bay Council and Wetsfield resolving their “paid or free” parking dispute.

2014 has all the right ingredients

In late 2007 we had the commencement of the GFC. After about a year, in late 2008, some of the GFC commentators said that a recovery would not be likely until 2014. It seemed such a long way off at the time. We all wondered what we could we expect out of the next 5 years. Well now we know.

2014 is showing a lot of promise, particularly for the Sunshine State and for our little pocket here in North Lakes. We will start seeing the completion of many of the projects commenced in 2013 and this will continue to drive employment and growth.

Stability in jobs numbers is the key to continued consumer spending and a stable economy and this year is already seeing job cuts in a number of areas nationally, largely manufacturing and export industries. The retail sector is a major driver of our local economy and  should not affected as much as these other industries, which is good news.

The real estate sector in South East Queensland could be in for a boost with sustained low interest rates, more people wanting homes than are being built, Commonwealth Games, G20 summit, and record sales prices seen in the other major capital cities over the past year.

We could be in for a good year, finally.

NewsXpress Profile

We now have a newsagent outside the Westfield precinct with the opening last week of News Xpress in the new North Lakes Central building.

Jim and Nick Cassimatis are well experienced in the News Agency business, having owned News Xpress in Caboolture for the past 15 years.

The opening of the new shop represents for many locals the hope of pedestrianisation of the town centre, where cars have ruled for so long.

You can keep up to date with all the goings on, lotto superdraws and exclusive products at the NewsXpress Facebook page.

We wish Jim and Nick all the best with their new shop.

Call for second North Lakes Post Office

1
Australia Post

For some time residents of North Lakes and Mango Hill have called for more post boxes and a second Post Office to ease the pressure on the North Lakes Post Office at Westfield where customers regularly complain of long waiting times.

Since the last time Australia Post were asked, in July 2013 there has been no commitment to provide these much needed additional postal services.

So, while The Redcliffe region has seven Australia Post outlets, North Lakes and Mango Hill have just one.

Rail Construction starts but fares sky high

1
Moreton Rail Link

This month the Moreton Bay Rail Link Project gets underway with the clearing of the rail corridor from Petrie to Kallangur commencing. The project site is set up at the former Amcor Mill in Petrie where there is also Community Information Centre.

First conceived in 1895, the 12.6-kilometre rail link will connect the North Lakes and Redcliffe regions with the Brisbane rail network, which currently ends at Petrie.

New train stations will be built at Kallangur, Murrumba Downs, Mango Hill, Mango Hill East, Rothwell and Kippa-Ring.

One dampener on the commencement of this project however, is todays 7.5% price hike on the already extraordinarily high cost of public transport in Queensland, as compared with other states. Translink are attempting to sell this as a good news item with “The previously scheduled 15% fare increase for 2014 has been halved” being advertised.

Queensland Rail transport patronage is in decline and a price hike is not the answer to improving it. What do you think?

Kangaroos in danger.

0
Kangaroos

In the Mango Hill and North lakes areas there are fewer and fewer places for congregation for the local kangaroo population. Everyone will be familiar with seeing kangaroos crossing our roads from time to time to reach their meeting places and in dry times, search out grazing spots.

Speed, inattention and poorly lit roads result in the death and injury of our local kangaroos on a weekly basis, which often sit on the vegetated median strips and cross the road without warning. Extra care and awareness is needed when out and about driving in our cars.

The conservation areas of Hays Inlet at the northern end of North Lakes and Mango Hill and the numerous acreages and parks provide protection for these shy animals, but as the urban development progresses, it is a concern that roo movements and incidents will only increase.

To be able to take measures to preserve our kangaroo populations, more information is needed on kangaroo movements in the local area. This Saturday, 11th January 2014, the Mango Hill and North Lakes Environmental Group (MHANLEG) are asking local residents to take part in a count-a-roo exercise to gather statistics around kangaroo movements and mob gatherings.

Simply, when you are out and about on Saturday, if you see any kangaroos, note down the location, time, number of adult roos and number of joeys. If possible, note the sex of the adults.

So, where are our roos favourite spots? We will provide an update on this MHANLEG initiative as soon as we have more details. In the meantime, please participate in “count-a-roo” on Saturday 11th January to help make a difference.

Visit the Mango Hill and North Lakes Environmental Group Facebook Page for more pics and all the details.
