Costco membership – Have you got one?

Costco North Lakes Qld

Costco North Lakes

The Costco information and sign up outlet on Discovery Drive has been experiencing increased traffic since the announcement that it is set to close it’s doors next week before Costco North Lakes big opening on May 29. This weekend the temporary office will be open from 9:00am – 5:00pm for those wishing to shop who have yet to get a membership.

After the Discovery Drive office closure, there remains the opportunity to sign up at the membership counter at the warehouse, prior to the big opening on May 29.

The planned opening of Costco North Lakes warehouse has proved a driver of local commercial investment and is a significant inducement for other large national and international corporations to claim their footprint in South East Queensland.

With current heavy fluctuations in fuel prices, it is not only hoped that the introduction of the Costco fuel pumps will broadly reduce local fuel prices, but also provide less volatility.

Regardless of whether you want to buy fuel or warehouse goods, if you intend to shop at Costco, you will need to hold a membership card.

Who are ComLink? Volunteers needed.

0
ComLink Volunteers

ComLink North Lakes is up, operational and ready to assist our community.

ComLink is a not-for-profit organisation and charity providing personalised transport services and care to the aged and disabled for social outings, shopping and medical appointments.

Thanks to federal Home and Community Care funding, the long established Sunshine Coast community transport organisation now provide these much needed services in the greater Moreton Bay and North Brisbane regions. They are also currently undertaking expansion into Bundaberg, Ipswich, Cairns, Townsville and satellite sites in Gympie, Childers and Gin Gin.

It is recognised that living a balanced and fulfilling life is intrinsic to our health and wellbeing, so ComLink’s transport services are not limited to medical appointments but also transport clients to shopping centres for social outings, hair appointments to maintain their social inclusion. They will even provide staff to assist with shopping requirements.

ComLink drivers have basic first aid skills, have undergone a police check and hold a blue card, as well as receiving training in policy, induction, driver fatigue and sometimes specialty areas such as caring for someone with dementia.

ComLink averages provides hundreds of trips per week in the Moreton Bay Region and due to a rising demand for our services in the North Lakes and surrounding areas, ComLink are in regular need of volunteer drivers to help transport clients and be involved in the community.

The North Lakes division drivers predominantly undertake medical transport services for Queensland Health including hospital transfers, admissions and discharges, as well as some trips for the transport disadvantaged.

If you would like to help people in need in your community you might consider becoming a ComLink volunteer. You should hold a current small or medium vehicle license, preferably for bus, but car license holders will be considered as well.

Steve Mason, a volunteer driver and long-term resident of North Lakes said the thing he enjoys most about volunteering is meeting people. “I have always believed in a sense of community and by volunteering, I personally get back a lot more than I give,” says Steve.

Many of ComLink’s 3,800+ clients rely on ComLink as their only means of transport. “Everyone working for ComLink is considered family. The level of commitment is completely up to them,” says Ms Adra, ComLink Chief Executive.

If you are interested in becoming a ComLink volunteer, please contact Mobility Manager Robyn Elkojje on 1300 761 011 or visit their website – ComLink Volunteers.

Wray Organic Market & Cafe Opening

0
Wray Organic Owners

Today the Wray Organic Market and Cafe opens it’s doors to the public at 23 Discovery Drive, North Lakes with the grand opening being held on Saturday, 5th April at 10am.

Deborah Wrays’ enthusiasm and passion as the founder of Wray Organic Market is clear in the way she describes her stores. She is rightfully proud of a very diverse range of Certified Organic foodstuffs, which has been a driver in the success of the business.

It was wonderful to hear the story of the beginnings of the now 9 branch franchise. Deb (right), pictured with North Lakes store owner Tanya Cunningham, opened her first store together with husband Gary at Palm Beach on the Gold Coast in 2005.

Deb was professionally recommended to eliminate as many chemicals and pesticides from her families diet as possible, but found from first hand experience that there was no single place to buy a good range of organic foods and out of this, the idea for Wray Organic Market was born. With a particular focus on foodstuffs, Deb found that there was a real demand for her products.

The Wray Organic owners stock only Organically Certified products but within that framework, also regularly review products and suppliers, considering every ingredient and whether or not it has has been grown / cultivated / manufactured to ethical standards.

As well as quality produce and products, Wray Organic Market also strives to provide affordability, which is a mantra rarely touted in the organic sector.

Just some of the things you can look forward to at Wray Organic Market from today are fresh organic fruit and vegetable juices served over the counter, organic coffee at the Wray Organic Cafe, a range of fruits and vegetables, cooking ingredients, meat, poultry and fish, breads, cold-pressed oils, yoghurt, ice-cream, personal-care products, books and much more. You really must come in-store to see that you really can get everything you might expect at your regular supermarket and more, organically.

Wray Organic Market and Cafe issue a monthly Newsletter detailing all their specials and latest news. Visit the Wray Organic Market Newsletter page on their website to subscribe.

We congratulate and wish all the very best to store owners Nathan and Tanya and be sure to support them on Grand Opening day Saturday, 5th April from 10am. Visit the business listing for Wray Organic Market North Lakes.

Mango Hill Markets bigger and better

0
Mango Hill Markets

On Saturday 29th March, the second Mango Hill Markets was held with a wonderful turnout by both stallholders and patrons. 70+ stallholders were involved showing their wares, services, performances, rides and games.

The event was hosted in the grounds of St. Benedicts Primary School at St Benedicts Close, Mango Hill and was a credit to the organisers.

The market was under threat from rain as it has been a very wet week, but thankfully the sun was shining, if only for the duration of the markets. Well done to the organisers for diverting the stormclouds. We look forward to many more market days.

Stallholders and exhibitors included the Institute of Modern Tae Kwon Do, Lil Shimmeys Dance & Fitness, Grasshopper Soccer, GameOn Family Fun Centre, Berry Good Jam and Chutney, Lime Physical Therapy, Fitness Matters Gym, Vivace School of Music, Kerobi Crystals, Wray Organic Market and Cafe and Click With You Photography.

We have posted some pictures of the day below and we look forward to keeping you updated on future Mango Hill Markets.

Please view the Mango Hill Markets event page for the date and details of the next Mango Hill Markets.

Mango Hill Village Welcome Sign

0
Mango Hill Village Welcome Sign

After 10 years of continuous lobbying to the local council by the Mango Hill Progress Association for a “Welcome to Mango Hill Village” sign, the installation of this new sign on Thursday 20th March is  a tribute to the perseverance of a community.

Located on Kinsellas Road West, just along from Light Horse Court, this new sign reflects the semi-rural history and bush setting of this small village with it’s own bush belt, defining it’s character and community values amidst the rapidly developing satellite city of North Lakes.

Your comments on the sign and the chosen design are welcome.

New Bridge link for Capestone Pathways

0
Capestone Pathways Bridge

A crane has lifted into place the steel bridge over Wywurri Creek to complete the section of the new cycleway/walking path linking the St. Benedicts School side of Anzac Avenue to Capestone Boulevard. This will provide safe cycle and foot access for students and families.

With the Capestone development ramping up, as evidenced by the current clearing of Kinsellas Heights, there is a real need for a co-ordinated pathways program in both Mango Hill and North Lakes.

It is hoped that these pathways will not only connect adjacent areas but will also link into the new Moreton Bay Rail corridor, which will extend from Petrie to Kippa-Ring and will include it’s own dedicated shared pathway (cycle / walk-way) the 12km length of of the corridor.

MP’s at Mango Hill Progress Association

0
Progress Association Meeting

Federal and State Members Luke Howarth and Reg Gulley addressed over 50 residents at the Mango Hill Progress Associations AGM last night.

Reg Gulley presented lifetime membership plaques each to Gail Christie and Bronwyn Ninness for their service over many years and wished farewell to Yvonne Mackenzie after 23 years of devoted service to the Mango Hill Progress Association.

Both Luke and Reg took questions from the audience and topics raised were issues such as the need for more Australia Post post boxes in North Lakes and a request for additional signage on the Bruce Highway southbound to include “Mango Hill”.  This will help southbound drivers not to miss the turn off to Mango Hill, which results in a journey all the way to Bald Hills before one can legally turn around and go back.  (14 km journey).

One local resident raised a large disparity in the speed of internet connections from house to house in the same street with some achieving above 5MBPS, with others such as himself unable to get more than 2MBPS regardless of numerous efforts with Telstra and to make matters worse, the new estate just meters away all have NBN connections.

It is certainly good to see the members attend community meetings as it provides them with real examples of community concern. Reg Gulley has already attended an number of Mango Hill Progress Association meetings this year and the Association also thanks Luke for his attendance last night.

Mango Hill Progress Association meetings are held every third Wednesday of the month at the Mango Hill Community Hall adjacent to Danzy Buchanan Park. For more information, please visit the Mango Hill Progress Association website.

Telstra sells Yellow Pages

1
Telstra sells Yellow Pages

Telstra has sold 100% of Yellow and White Pages and 70% of Yellow Pages parent Company Sensis, to US Private Equity firm Platinum Equity for $454 million. Under the deal, Telstra retains it’s voice services business, including 1223 directory assistance and also retains full ownership of the Trading Post website which it bought in 2004 for $636 million.

Recently, the business had been valued at around $3 billion. It’s value has been in a steady decline since 2005, when Sensis was valued at $12 billion by analysts. At that time, before smartphones and the explosion of online directories, the then Sensis CEO Bruce Akhurst was urging Telstra chief executive of the day, Sol Trujillo to part with the business.

For Telstra it has certainly been a fire sale but may be considered good timing as it is thought that significant restructuring at the Yellow Pages and SiteSmart businesses may be required. Negative publicity surrounding further job losses after almost 400 Australian jobs were “offshored” by Yellow Pages last year, is not something Telstra would want. Being that the businesses are now foreign owned, there will be fewer damaging headlines.

Government Reviews Foreign Policy

0
Foreign Aid Review

The Australian Government is reviewing foreign policy and looking to establish accountability for aid outcomes from aid recipient nations if they are to continue to benefit from Australian donations, with a particular focus on Asia Pacific aid to countries such as Papua New Guinea and Fiji.

Australia is the largest bilateral aid donor to Papua New Guinea, offering about US$200 million a year in assistance according to Wikipedia, which is now concentrated on project development in civil organisations, health, education and agriculture, rather than budgetary support which was provided some years ago. It has been noted by the Australian Government that the PNG administration is a long way from meeting most of its development targets and in fact going backwards on many, such as HIV prevention measures.

In Fiji, the objective is to assist the return to democracy with the country united. It is no use putting pressure on Fiji to return to a democratic nation without that unity, but providing aid to a country under military rule is certainly not considered by Australia a proper long term viability.

Costco brings jobs.

0
Job Creation in North Lakes

Costco is due to open around May this year and is expected to provide work for up to 400 employees. Jobs at the North Lakes outlet of the US megastore have been advertised since mid January. Many are excited about the opening and the potential savings on regular consumable items. Petrol savings are certainly anticipated and likely to put pressure on Coles and Woolworths to drop their petrol prices, particularly in the immediate surrounds.

This job creation in construction and long term retail sector employment is much welcomed as unemployment has risen from 5.8 to 6 per cent across Australia with Queensland unemployment figures a bit worse than the average up from 5.9 to 6.1 per cent, mainly due to resources sector job losses.

The Australian Government will be praying for the retail and construction sectors to continue to show growth this year to at least provide a buffer for other sector job losses.

North Lakes is particularly well placed as a beneficiary of the ongoing strength in commercial and housing construction.

The image shows Channel Seven reporter, Kim Skubris covering a story on jobs in the region.

North Lakes Lambo Deal

0
Lamborghini Deal

Harcourts North Lakes have brought fresh thinking to real estate marketing by offering a ride in the Company’s Lambo if you list your property with them.

It was good enough to make page three of the North Lakes Times so, looks like a winner already. I have seen this car twice in one week, so not only will it be cranking up a few miles (1.609344 kms), but it might even get some to consider trading in their SV6 Commodore for a 1984 Ferrari 308, who knows. Here’s the link – Trade in your SV6 for a 308.
