Moreton Bay Regional Council this week kicks-off its bushfire season preparations with the first hazard reduction burns for 2018.
Council fire crews, together with the Queensland Fire and Emergency Service (QFES) are conducting a controlled burns today at:
Mayor Allan Sutherland said now was the time for authorities and the community to begin bushfire season preparations with conditions beginning to dry throughout the region.
“Council and state fire authorities have been closely monitoring local bushland and have scheduled more than 35 controlled burns over coming months to prepare for the bushfire season,” Mayor Sutherland said.
Planned burns reduce fire loads and are conducted in accordance with favourable weather conditions. Controlled burns also provide additional benefits such as aiding in weed control and land rehabilitation, and maintaining habitat diversity.
“To keep up-to-date with planned burns in your area tune into local media, or sign up for council’s free MoretonAlert service, which will send you a notification for any upcoming burns via text or email.
For the full list of planned burns in 2018, visit: www.moretonbay.qld.gov.au/plannedburns. Properties adjoining planned burn locations will be notified via letterbox drop prior to burns taking place.
Mayor Sutherland said in total, council will conduct burns across more than 300 hectares throughout Moreton Bay, but that doesn’t mean residents can be complacent.
“As council and fire authorities ramp up their fire mitigation activities, it’s important that residents are also prepared.
“Fires don’t limit themselves to bushland. They can occur in suburban areas, near parks and grassland. All it takes is a few burning embers or smoke.
“You can visit council’s website [www.moretonbay.qld.gov.au/disaster/bushfire] for information and tips on how to be bushfire-ready.”

Laguna North Lakes – the architecturally designed development in the heart of the town centre has received formal development application (DA) approval from the Moreton Bay Regional Council.
The visionary precinct to be developed by The George Group in partnership with Pointcorp, will see the 1.7-hectare, $250 million precinct, set a benchmark for a mixed-use development in a traditionally suburban region, 26 kilometres north of the Brisbane CBD.
Watch this short video to get an insight into North Lakes New Civic Precinct:
Laguna will deliver a 138-room hotel, 10,500sqm of A-grade commercial office space, 2,000sqm of health and wellness facilities, a 3,000sqm ‘resort-style’ restaurant and bar, and a publicly accessible aquatic centre with a lagoon-style pool.
Approximately 5,000sqm of fashion, food and beverage retail will provide a curated high-street retail precinct.
Anchoring the development will be the 3,500sqm Laguna North Lakes convention and events centre, which will be one of the largest purpose-built venues in northern Brisbane, catering for 720 guests banquet style and 1600 standing, over two levels.
Leading Brisbane-based architecture firm Richards and Spence have teamed up with acclaimed firm Nettleton Tribe, to design a classic and timeless architectural destination.
Construction is planned to commence in late 2018, with completion targeted for late 2020.
Patrick George, Director of The George Group, says the precinct has been designed as a destination that will be activated day and night.
“During the day locals, workers in the commercial tenancies, and indeed visitors to the region will enjoy a wide range of boutique retailers, cafes and outdoor dining, all revolving around a central tree-lined, pedestrian-orientated high-street, to be known as ‘Laguna Drive’.
“Families and hotel guests will also flock to the lagoon-style public pool or gym, and then after work and during the evening, the precinct will remain activated with the restaurants, bars and cafes offering a myriad of cuisines and experiences.
“The Laguna convention and events centre will also play an important role in meeting community demand for event and meeting spaces.
“To date there has been a wide range of local, Brisbane-based and national interest in leasing both retail and food and beverage tenancies. Interest in commercial tenancies has also been very strong.
“We are very excited that Laguna North Lakes will deliver a host of benefits for the North Lakes community that will make it quite unique to any other mixed-use precinct in a suburban context. It will become the village heart of North Lakes and the Moreton Bay region,” added Mr George.

In a tight and hard fought match the Roo’s were successful in holding off some good runs from the Diehards late in the game.
The Roo’s have had a great support team step up this year to mentor them and the dedication from all was clear in pre match prep.
Coach Rob Roshan was clearly very proud of the boys and very satisfied to take the Premiership in his debut year of rugby league coaching.
Big Local wishes to congratulate the North Lakes Roo’s players, coaches and Junior League officials on a great year.
