Brendan Loses his Locks for a Good Cause

Brendan-Waite-worlds-greatest-shave

Brendan-Waite-loses-his-locks-for-a-good-causeIn Australia someone receives the news that they have a blood cancer every forty-one minutes. That is thirty-five people a day. 12,775 on average a year.

Blood cancer will touch all of us at some stage, whether through friends, family or ourselves. Raising money to find research and to support families facing it is important.

“If all it takes to raise money to help out those in my community going through this, is to look a little bit silly with a bald head, it is a very small price to pay”, Brendan Waite said.

Currently, Brendan has raised just over $1,350. Donations are still open: http://my.leukaemiafoundation.org.au/brendanwaite

Take-the-sudsy-challenge

Well, there are 116,000 Australians experiencing homelessness and that’s too many people feeling lonely and disconnected from their community.

Sudsy-challenge-orange-sky-april-2019

Orange Sky Australia provides a safe, non-judgemental and reliable space for volunteers and friends to connect through genuine conversation.

This April 5-7, you can make a difference in someone’s life by wearing the same set of clothes for three days (without washing them!) and starting conversations that matter.

Conversations that will raise funds and awareness so that we can continue support friends through clean clothes, warm showers and genuine conversation.

Sign up to the challenge today at https://bit.ly/2O216Ks

Orange Sky Australia is the world’s first free mobile laundry service for people experiencing homelessness – an idea founded in a Brisbane garage by two 20-year-old mates, Nic Marchesi and Lucas Patchett. In late 2014, the boys installed a couple of washing machines and dryers in the back of their old van and visited parks around Brisbane to wash and dry clothes for free. What started as an idea to improve hygiene standards and restore dignity to people doing it tough has evolved into something much bigger and more powerful.

Orange Sky Australia provides services locally alongside The Breakfast Club Redcliffe Inc.

Crime Rate Down as Thin Blue Line Gets Stronger

More-Police-Moreton-crime-rates-down

The 2017-2018 Crime Report shows the crime rate overall has dropped by 4.4 per cent in the north of Moreton Bay.

Chris Whiting said it reflects the increase of thirty-two extra police in the northern Moreton area since the Palaszczuk Government was elected.

“The Justice Report and the Crime Report show criminals are facing more charges and more arrests because this government has delivered more Police and more resources for the Moreton region,” said Chris Whiting.

Thin Blue Line

“One of the first actions of the Palaszczuk Government was to establish an independent crime statistics body,” said Chris Whiting.

Statistics for the north Moreton region in the reports include:
– offences against property rates down 4 per cent
– break-ins down 8.9 per cent
– the rate of shop break-ins down by 22.9 per cent
– fraud dropping 35.8 per cent
– breaches in domestic and family violence protection orders down 2.1 per cent
– drug offences down 2.2 per cent.
– a slight increase in overall offences against the person (1.1%)
– assaults are up 2.6 per cent
– rape and attempted rape up 19.9 per cent.

“There are more police in Queensland now than ever before,” Chris Whiting said.

“We will also deliver an additional five hundred and thirty-five Police personnel over the next three years.

“This government will continue to provide police with the resources, training and technology they need to keep communities safe,” Chris Whiting said.

0
IKEA-CASH-FOR-CONTAINER

RETURN-IT-IKEAIKEA North Lakes are implementing a RETURN-IT container for recyclable bottles and cans as a fixed collection point for everyone in the North Lakes community to drop off their recyclable bottles and cans.

Any bottles and cans from the IKEA store bins, and any unmarked bags, will have their 10c per container donated to the winner of IKEA North Lakes Living Local Grant scheme. Currently the Living Local recipient is Sunshine Butterflies located on the Sunshine coast, they provide information, support, resources and programs to individuals and families living with a disability in a safe and happy learning environment.

This initiative supports the Queensland Containers for change scheme. The scheme with RETURN-IT is simpler than others as you don’t need dedicated bags for the drop off and plastic and glass bottles can be mixed in your bag/box that you place in the container. They are sorted at the depots and then your refund is given to your account, the container location is next to our trailer parking and where our future Electric Vehicle charging will be located.

International Women’s Day

0
iwd-logo

International-womens-day-north-lakes-qld

“Invest in Women – Invest in the Future” is the 2019 theme for Queensland Women’s Week, running from 2nd March to 10th March and includes the annual International Women’s Day on 8th March. A day that celebrates the achievements of women all over the world who in their everyday lives are making a difference for the generations to come.

International Women’s Day (March 8) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity.

No one government, NGO, charity, corporation, academic institution, women’s network or media hub is solely responsible for International Women’s Day. Many organizations declare an annual IWD theme that supports their specific agenda or cause, and some of these are adopted more widely with relevance than others. International Women’s Day is a collective day of global celebration and a call for gender parity.

International Women’s Day is all about unity, celebration, reflection, advocacy and action – whatever that looks like globally at a local level. But one thing is for sure, International Women’s Day has been occurring for well over a century – and continues to grow from strength to strength.

One of the many aspects of life that is essential to growth and freedom is financial security. It is becoming increasing talked about that women, especially those in the over 65 years are fast becoming Australians leading group of homeless. Historically women have been the homemakers and not always been actively involved in making major financial decisions at home or business. Financial Literacy is an imperative key to help narrow the knowledge gap and provide independence and safety.

Some of the factors about women and money are well recognised, including lower average incomes, broken work patterns- usually for family reasons, lower participation rates when it comes to superannuation and in the end lose superannuation to live on in retirement. On average women also tend to live longer so that a women’s saving need to go further. There is absolutely no doubt that these are big issues for many women and their families, and they’re important to keep in mind in any discussion regarding women and money.

Education is a powerful tool. However, that education and information need to connect with those in the community that are most at risk. Our Moreton Bay region has a large culturally diverse and economically disadvantaged demographic. As the theme, “Invest in Women-Invest in the Future” implies by empowering our women now, we empower the generations that follow. Women from these cultural and linguistic diverse communities are interested in securing a better financial future for themselves ad families. They are passionate about ensuring the younger generations are more informed and proactive in financial literacy and decision making. This exchange of ideas and knowledge comes via storytelling and listening which is made especially relevant when told by someone from a similar background and situation.

Momey-money-money-its-a-rich-mans-world-iwdSoroptimist International Moreton North, SIMNI, is a local NFP, whose volunteer members are passionate about helping those in the community less fortunate than themselves. They have been successful in obtaining grant funding from Department Child Safety, Youth and Women to host a Queensland Women’s Week event. This event “Money, Money, Money – Not just a rich man’s world” is being held at North Lakes Sports Club on Saturday 2nd March from 3pm – 6pm. Admission is only $10 and helps to support SIMNI’s educational bursary programs.

Come along and enjoy a Q & A panel discussion on women’s financial disadvantage and economic insecurity, with women leaders in the field of financial literacy, listen to personal stories from women who have overcome challenges of relocation, language and gender to thrive in a foreign place, enjoy afternoon tea and refreshments and gain information from our trade displays.

The event will culminate in the 7th Annual SIMNI Be Inspired IWD Award ceremony celebrating the achievements of local women within our community who have stepped up and beyond to make a difference in other people lives.
