Watch out! Kids about!

North Lakes and Mango Hill drivers are being reminded to slow down and be extra attentive near schools when first term starts tomorrow.

TLC-back-to-schoolMember for Murrumba said drivers needed to take extra care and stay alert to help keep young ones safe.“The holidays may be over, but the importance of road safety – whether on four wheels, two wheels or two legs – should always be top of mind” Mr Whiting said.

“There’s always a lot more happening on the road when school goes back, and the potential for tragedy increases.

“There is more traffic on the road, and more potential for excited and distracted school children to dart out unexpectedly from behind other cars where they can be hard to see.

“The lower speed zone limits will be enforced around schools from next week to help counter this and keep our children safe.

Mr Whiting also reminded drivers to keep their hands off their phones when driving, even at traffic lights or stopped in traffic to ensure their attention is only on the road.

“Having your eyes and attention off the road to check or send a message, or your social media feed, is never safe or acceptable,” Mr Whiting said.

“Please put your phone away until you are safely parked – not in traffic.

“I also encourage parents and carers to remind children about the best ways to stay safe on and around the road, especially if they are travelling to or from school independently.

“For those catching the bus or train, encourage them to leave with plenty of time to spare so they aren’t tempted to rush near the road to catch their service. And of course, remind children to only use the designated railway crossings.

“Because we all use the roads so much every day, sometimes it’s easy to forget just how dangerous they can be, especially for children who can often be distracted by their friends, their phone or music.

“Please encourage them to stay focused on walking or riding safely.”
