Ko-Work – a Model of Modern Working Life?

Ko-Work Space, North Lakes

With co-working spaces firmly entrenched in the CBD, the re-launched ‘Ko-Work’ of 4 Sibley Street, North Lakes is proving that the outer suburbs is just as friendly to the freelancer or startup.

Ko-Work supports the modern, flexible working life… supportive and professional office space, only five minutes from home.

It’s certainly a desirable option to work closer to home than join the rush of CBD commuters. Once a member, you can go in at any time of day with a pin pass (from $30 per day). Or you could hire a private office space, meeting room or function room, and have on hand Wi-Fi Internet and printer facilities.

Ko-Work has recently been founded by Hilton Misso of the Hilton Misso Group.

With this not-yet-retired Director at the helm, Ko-Work is well-managed by a team of six. Hilton noted in his launch speech that he owns several North Lakes spaces, so if Ko-Work grows, the demand can be easily accommodated.

Tracy Armstrong, Manager of Ko-Work, tells us that the icon of Ko-Work is bamboo, which is because bamboo roots take a long time to stretch out – around five years – and then plants shoot up in just six months, and this mirrors Ko-work’s aims of building up solid networks in the business community.

Members of the Ko-Work network offer specialist business workshops or courses in the training rooms, e.g. social media prospecting, aspects of business law, and other in-demand topics. This is to enable a more all-round approach to help local businesses.

Smaller businesses in the area can easily rent a meeting room to do interviews or arrange meetings with visitors.

Any type of business can be a network member; people can join for free and engage in the courses that will benefit them.

Another reason to rent a desk for one day a week is to work remotely (nearer home) for a large company. Employees can utilise a solid Internet connection and work for the main office without any distractions.

Many freelancers or consultants work from home, so attracting them in is the allure of regular business contacts and possible projects. Todd Stubbings, a management consultant who uses Ko-Work regularly says, “I think the big potential for all these sort of facilities is the opportunity to network with other users and find out what they do, and even explore how we could possibly help each other.”
