Costco brings jobs.

Costco is due to open around May this year and is expected to provide work for up to 400 employees. Jobs at the North Lakes outlet of the US megastore have been advertised since mid January. Many are excited about the opening and the potential savings on regular consumable items. Petrol savings are certainly anticipated and likely to put pressure on Coles and Woolworths to drop their petrol prices, particularly in the immediate surrounds.

This job creation in construction and long term retail sector employment is much welcomed as unemployment has risen from 5.8 to 6 per cent across Australia with Queensland unemployment figures a bit worse than the average up from 5.9 to 6.1 per cent, mainly due to resources sector job losses.

The Australian Government will be praying for the retail and construction sectors to continue to show growth this year to at least provide a buffer for other sector job losses.

North Lakes is particularly well placed as a beneficiary of the ongoing strength in commercial and housing construction.
