A Parents Worst Nightmare

It’s the phone call no parent wants to receive.

Written by Amanda Anderson amanda-anderson

On April 21st this year, Elliott Biggs Father took a phone call from one of Elliott’s friends, notifying him that he had just witnessed Elliott’s car involved in a serious car crash at the Anzac Avenue, Diamond Jubilee Way intersection in Mango Hill.

Elliott-Biggs-Car-CrashElliott’s father rushed to the scene that night, to find his son in and out of consciousness while emergency services rushed to cut him free from his car with the assistance of hydraulic tools.

The traumatic images that surfaced on social media left many concerned locals wondering whether there were any survivors. The cars involved were so badly damaged that it seemed a fatality was likely.

Twenty year old Elliott was the driver of the black Subaru Impreza. He sustained serious injuries in the accident and as a result, was put in an induced coma for five days at the Royal Brisbane & Women’s Hospital. He suffered brain bruising and a bleed, a crack in his skull and required two plates to be inserted in his eye socket and cheek bone. He underwent surgery on two separate occasions, by an Ophthalmic and Maxillofacial surgeon.

Elliott-in-hospital

After coming out of the Intensive Care Unit he spent several more weeks in the ward before being transferred to the Princess Alexandra Hospital to commence brain injury rehabilitation. Elliott spent a total of twenty-seven days in the hospital and lost 9kg of body weight.

Given all of the trauma his body has sustained, Elliott has recovered surprisingly well. He still has blurry vision and some bruising around his left eye and optic nerve.

Despite this, Elliott has a bright outlook and intends to achieve his life goals once he is completely recovered.

His parents are eternally grateful to all emergency and medical personnel who assisted with Elliott’s survival and recovery.

The Forensic Crash Unit is still investigating and Police are appealing for witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage at the Anzac Avenue/Diamond Jubilee Way intersection at the time of the crash to come forward. You can submit information anonymously to PoliceLink or CrimeStoppers

Anzac-Avenue-Diamond-Jubilee-WayHeading over the bridge toward Anzac Avenue, a crest in the road just prior to the intersection makes it difficult to see oncoming traffic. With the intersection last year upgraded from 70km per hour to an 80km per hour zone, a significant danger is posed, if vehicles ignore traffic signals as has been regularly witnessed here.

Elliott and his parents believe it would be of great benefit to the community to have red light/speed cameras installed.

Moreton Bay Regional Council has been made aware of community concern over this intersection, with a joint submission from North Lakes Now and the Mango Hill Progress Association. We will keep you updated with their response.

Council searches for solution to North Lakes CBD parking issue

0
North-Lakes-Parking-Issue

Moreton Bay Regional Council is exploring options to introduce a smart car parking system to better manage parking in the North Lakes CBD.

Councillor for Division 4, Julie Greer, said in the first major step for the pilot project, council would seek Expressions of Interest for the design, installation and operation of the system over the next three weeks.

“This EOI process will allow us to better understand what smart car-parking systems, processes and technology are currently available and what system may work best to help manage parking demand in the increasingly busy North Lakes CBD,” Cr Greer said.

“Everywhere you look in North Lakes, there’s new businesses opening their doors and jobs being created, which is fantastic – but with a population of more than 20,000 and visitors coming from all over to shop, dine, or work, we know it’s important that we effectively manage parking within the CBD area.

North-Lakes-Parking-Issue

“Since Westfield North Lakes introduced paid parking for stays longer than three hours, we’ve seen significant increases in the number of motorists parking in free, public parking spaces in the CBD for extended periods, and even all day.

“Through the trial of council’s first smart car-parking system, we’ll be looking to limit all-day parking in the CBD so that more short term parking opportunities of 2-3 hours can be provided.

“By restricting all-day parking and improving the availability of short term parking bays, we hope to revitalise the CBD and make it far easier for residents and visitors to access local businesses and services in this area.

“It’s intended that the system will have the capability to integrate with smart technology which could deliver benefits such as active signage providing real-time parking information, similar to that seen in some shopping centres, or even the potential for a smart phone application directing motorists to available parking spaces and providing a notification when their stay is approaching the time limit.”

Aurora Boulevard Park Upgrade

Moreton Bay Regional Council are funding a $418,000 facility upgrade of Aurora Boulevard Park, including the construction of new amenities and storage.

Councillor for Division Four, Julie Greer, said the project was great news for the local community, and would help boost the capacity of Aurora Boulevard Park to host local sporting teams and community activities.

“Council is committed to creating a strong sporting and outdoor culture in Moreton Bay, and I can’t wait to see this fantastic facility built and being used by our local sporting teams and community” Cr Greer said.

“This $418,000 project will deliver a new on-site facility with shared amenities and storage for sporting and other equipment.

Aurora-Boulevard-Park-green-space

“This facility will be a great asset for the Caboolture Sports Club Group, as well as local sporting clubs who regularly use the sporting grounds including North Lakers Softball Club, Lakes Football Club and the Redcliffe Triathlon Club.

“Council recently entered into a community lease with the Caboolture Sports Club Group for the management of its Aurora, Kinsellas and Woodside sports grounds in North Lakes, to allow local sporting teams to focus on what they do best – competing and fostering healthy, active lifestyles in our community.

“Together with this $418,00 investment, I hope to see Aurora continue to build its reputation as a fantastic sporting facility for North Lakes.

“With the tender this week awarded to Murphy Builders Qld Pty Ltd, work is expected to start on site in June and, weather permitting, we expect the new clubhouse will be ready to share with local sporting teams by October this year.”

Cr Greer said the project would add to the already fantastic facilities available to the community at Aurora Boulevard Park.

“In addition to its large sports field, the park boasts an exciting playground catering for all ages with a large slide and climbing net as well as a play truck and cubby,” she said.

“Together with a basketball court, skate park, dog off-leash areas and BBQ facilities, Aurora Boulevard Park is a great location for a family day out.”

Lipscombe Road and Park Road intersection now far safer for motorists

Lipscombe-Park-Road-Upgrade

Motorists are now benefiting from the completion of safety upgrades at a busy intersection in Deception Bay.

Member for Murrumba Chris Whiting said the $1.2 million project at the intersection of Deception Bay, Park and Lipscombe Roads would reduce crashes and improve traffic flow.

“We know this section of Deception Bay Road has a high crash and we wanted to make it safer.

Liscombe-Park-Road-Upgrade

Image sourced from Google maps of the intersection in October 2015.

“The $1.2 million project extended the westbound right-turn lane on Deception Bay Road and widened the road to create more space for motorists and reduce rear-end crashes.

“It also included changes to the traffic signals to improve the flow for traffic turning right.

“Around 30,000 vehicles per day travel through this intersection and these works have provided immediate safety benefits for these motorists.

“We thank the local community for their patience while the upgrades were delivered.”

Works began in February this year.

“The Safer Roads Sooner program aims to improve known and potential crash locations across the Queensland road network,” Mr Whiting said.

Opening date announced!

North Lakes Sports Club logo

The new North Lakes Sports Club will finally be opening it’s doors to the public in just over two weeks!

The new venue, which will be the first licensed club to be constructed on a greenfield site in almost 20 years, will open to the public on Saturday the 6th of May.

Before opening its doors to the public, more than 2,800 Foundation members will be offered an exclusive sneak peek inside the $25 million facility, with the Club announcing its opening program today.

North-Lakes-Sports-Club-Nearing-Completion

North Lakes Sports Club General Manager Chris Sartori said the pre-opening days would provide an important reward back to its foundation members.

“It was always our commitment to give our foundation members the chance to visit the club and enjoy our facilities and services before our public opening,” Mr Sartori said.

“This is great recognition for their support, however it also provides us with a vital period for our new team of almost 100 staff to test our facilities, equipment and service procedures.”

Mr Sartori said more than three years of hard work and planning has gone into getting to this stage, but the team were now excited to be just days away from opening.

“It was March 2014 when the CSC Group first commenced its search for potential sites in the North Lakes area and after a construction period of just under twelve months, we can’t wait to welcome our first members through the door.”

From this Friday through to the middle of next week, foundation members will begin to receive their invitations in the mail to one of the five pre-opening days.

The first foundation members will step through the doors from 10am on Monday 1st May, with five days dedicated to the foundation member pre-opening period.

“We’ll be starting off slowly with 300 members able to attend on this first day which is a public holiday, with numbers increasing throughout the week.”

“Upon presentation of their membership card, they’ll have the opportunity to visit the club at any time across their nominated day and each foundation member can bring along a maximum of one guest and two children.

“All our facilities will be on offer for each of the days including our restaurant, café, bars, kids club and gaming and will also be offering information sessions, free live entertainment and our members courtesy bus service.

“We want to give members a full taste of what’s to come.”

While announcing its opening dates, the Club also revealed details on some of its key food and beverage offers including a full service, casual dining restaurant.

Named after the Moreton Bay Fig tree which is commonly referred to as the ‘Australian Banyan’, Banyan Restaurant & Deck will feature as the centrepiece of the North Lakes Sports Club’s dining offers.

“Banyan Restaurant & Deck will provide a dining experience that is a step up from the traditional club fare, with a modern Australian menu that combines ingredients sourced from across the local region.

“Our menu includes signature steaks from the Sunshine Coast hinterland, seafood from the Moreton Bay region as well as ingredients sourced from some of Australia’s leading producers.

With a lunch menu starting at just $15 for members, Mr Sartori said the menu provided great value for money.

“We were very conscious when putting together our menu to ensure that we had the right balance of value for money and variety, as well as catering for a range of dietary requirements.

“While we offer full table service in our restaurant, we are focused on delivering a relaxed, casual dining experience that is family friendly and caters to our members and guests.”

In addition to the Banyan Restaurant & Deck, the Club will also operate a café and four bars, including a craft beer offer with six craft beers on tap.

The 3200m2 facility also includes 178 of the latest gaming machines, a UBET TAB and sports lounge, fully supervised kids club, entertainment and function facilities.

A free members courtesy bus will also operate 7 days a week for members in surrounding suburbs.

North Lakes Sports Club is located at 36-42 Flinders Parade, North Lakes. For more information, visit northlakessports.com.au or call 1300 006 572.

Bounty Boulevard State School Hall becomes a reality!

0
Chris-Whitings-work-pays-off

Member for Murrumba Chris Whiting has secured $5 million to build a new multipurpose hall at Bounty Boulevard State School!

Mr Whiting said he shared the good news with the school community today after years of campaigning.

“The Palaszczuk Government will invest $5 million to build a new school hall at Bounty Boulevard State School as part of our $200 million Advancing Queensland Schools funding package,” he said.

“The Bounty Boulevard school community have been calling for a new school hall for many years.

“Bounty Boulevard is now the largest Prep to Year 6 school in Queensland, and has lacked a fit-for-purpose venue to host assemblies, events and indoor sports.

“I know how important this facility is and I am proud to have delivered for our community.

“I want to congratulate the school leadership, the P&C and broader school community for their efforts to secure this funding.

“I’m looking forward to seeing the difference this hall makes to education at Bounty Boulevard State School.”

Mr Whiting said the project was expected to go to tender next month.

“Our government is determined to give every student in every school the best possible education,” he said.

“That means delivering the teachers, curriculum and school facilities we need to give students the best chance at success.

“This project will also create vital jobs for local tradies and more opportunities for apprentices and trainees.” Mr Whiting said.

The school hall at Bounty Boulevard State School is Chris Whiting’s top priority in this 2017 /18 budget bid lodged with the Treasurer, Curtis Pitt.

Chris Whiting has been lobbying the State Minister for Education Kate Jones, and the Treasurer Curtis Pitt for over a year for a new hall.

“Bounty Boulevard is now the state’s biggest primary school and I agree they need a fully enclosed school hall so kids can get a fully rounded education at this school,” Mr Whiting said.

“I am also pushing for continued construction of new classrooms for Bounty Boulevard, Mango Hill, and Griffin State Schools as well as North Lakes State College.

Funding boost for local Sports Clubs

0
sporting-grants-north-lakes-clubs

$60,000 in community grants announced by North Lakes Sports Club today will benefit nine sporting clubs in the North Lakes region.

Inaugural funding from the North Lakes Sports Club’s Sporting Development Fund saw grants awarded to The Lakes Football Club, North Lakes Mustangs Soccer, North Lakes Leopards Junior Rugby Union, North Lakes District Kangaroos Rugby League, North Lakes Blues Netball, Lakers Softball, North Lakes Eels Junior Australian Football, Redcliffe Tigers Australian Football and Pine Rivers Boars.

north-lakes-sports-club-grants

Image: CSC Group Sport & Community Manager, Tony Clarke with local junior sporting club representatives.

The funding grant includes cash support to the local sporting clubs as well as funding to assist with the fit out of the soon to be completed Kinsellas Sports Complex Clubhouse.

CSC Group Sport & Community Manager, Tony Clarke said an estimated 2,200 local sports people would benefit from the funding, including 191 registered sporting teams across the nine winter-season sporting clubs.

“Although the North Lakes Sports Club is yet to open its doors to the public, this grant is evidence of our commitment to providing for sport and community groups across the North Lakes region,” Mr Clarke said.

“The early establishment of these local partnerships by North Lakes Sports Club is the first step in replicating the award-winning community support program already provided by CSC Group to the Caboolture region.

“We have identified the Moreton Bay Regional Council Divisions 4 & 7 as the areas to be covered by our North Lakes community support programs, which includes the areas of North Lakes, Mango Hill, Murrumba Downs, Kallangur, Dakabin and Deception Bay.

“This now means that the reach of CSC Group’s community support programs will extend across six of the twelve Moreton Bay Council Divisions.

“This initial round of funding was specific to sporting groups operating during the winter season, with opportunities for summer season funding opening in May.”

One of the clubs to receive funding was North Lakes Mustangs Soccer, who has just signed up over 550 players for their 2017 season.

Mustangs President, Chris McMahon said the funding had already had a major impact on the club’s programs.

“In 2015, we ran an inclusive sport program as an off-shoot to the Brisbane Football Paralympic Program (BFPP), but due to lack of funding and suitable staff we weren’t able to continue it in 2016,” Mr McMahon said.

“Now, thanks to funding from North Lakes Sports Club, we have been able to immediately restart our inclusive sport program and have secured BFPP’s founder Jay Larkins to deliver the program.

Deadly synthetic drug detected in Brisbane

Urgent warning regarding dangerous drug capable of causing death detected in Queensland

Law enforcement and health professionals are issuing an urgent warning regarding a deadly drug that has been detected in Queensland, with fears anyone who takes or comes into contact with the drug risks death.

Minister for Police Mark Ryan said Queensland Police and the Australian Border Force (ABF) work collaboratively on the importation and distribution of illicit drugs and substances and have come together to issue a warning given the very real danger posed by this particular drug.

“I am advised that Carfentanyl is a highly toxic and potent synthetic based drug, with a 0.002mg dose enough to kill a person,” Minister Ryan said.

“The fact that this illegal drug has been located in Queensland is very concerning and together with the police, we are urging people to not take any risks at all with this illicit drug.

“The Palaszczuk Government will be working closely with the Queensland Police to ensure this drug is kept off our streets.”

“We are very concerned to see this drug in Queensland. Because of its capacity to cause death, it is important we get the message out as soon as possible to the community,” Detective Superintendent Jon Wacker of the QPS Drug and Serious Crime Group said.

The drug was intercepted by the ABF at a Brisbane mail centre and has been tested and positively identified as Carfentanyl.

“The drug is based on Fentanyl, but is significantly more potent. A small dose has the capacity to kill – this is not a drug anyone should be taking a risk with.

“Make no mistake, these are not party drugs. These are dangerous drugs and it’s not a matter of if it will kill you. This drug will kill you,” Detective Superintendent Wacker said.

While the drug has been reported in the United States, it is relatively new in Australia with one confirmed detection in Sydney by the ABF in December 2016 and now this most recent detection in Queensland.

“It is unclear how it would be marketed here, whether sold in its pure form or mixed with other drugs and sold as the latest “hook”. Either way, we know this drug is lethal and we need to get the warnings out now,” Detective Superintendent Wacker said.

The drug is commonly used as a tranquiliser for large animals, including elephants and the most minute of doses for humans is lethal.

Information suggests that anyone who comes into contact with the drug on their skin or eyes is also at a very great risk.

Law enforcement and ABF officers will continue to work together to identify the origin of the drug and to monitor and restrict its importation into Australia.

ABF Regional Commander for Queensland, Terry Price, also emphasised the seriousness of the find.

“This substance is roughly 10,000 times more potent than morphine. We will continue to work very closely with Queensland Police to investigate the circumstances behind this very troubling attempted import,” he said.

“The protection of the Australian community is something we are resolutely committed to. I’d like to commend our border officers for making this important detection in the international mail,” Regional Commander Price said.
