Beware of Fake Medicare Email

medicare-scam-north-lakes

medicare-scamScammers have set up a clone of the myGov website to trick you into sharing your login and bank account details.

The scam starts with a phishing email that looks like it is from Medicare, asking you to update your Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) details, so you can start receiving payments for Medicare benefits and claims.

If you click on the link in the email you are taken a replica of the real myGov website. You’ll note the URL includes ‘.net’ instead of ‘.gov.au’, which is an indication the website is not a legitimate Australian Government domain!

Straw no More

Straw-no-More-Moreton-Bay-Regional-Council

Straw-no-More-Moreton-Bay-Regional-CouncilMoreton Bay Regional Council has pledged to phase out the use of single-use plastic straws at its council-operated venues and events such as the Queensland State Equestrian Centre and from local council-run programs.

It’s a simple measure, which will hopefully make a huge difference on the overall amount of single-use, non-biodegradable plastic straws ending up in landfill or being littered in our waterways.

Moreton Bay joins Cairns Regional Council in being among the first councils in Queensland to vote to remove single-use straws from its venues and events.

Jeans for Genes Turns 25

25-years-jeans-4-genesJeans for Genes is the iconic fundraising campaign of the Children’s Medical Research Institute.

Jeans for Genes was established in 1994 to fund revolutionary research that helps diagnose, understand, and find cures or treatments for conditions affecting kids, including genetic diseases, cancer, and epilepsy.

1 in 20 kids are born with a genetic disease or birth defect. You likely know and care about someone affected.

Genetic diseases are one of the leading causes of death in kids under four and the main cause of ongoing hospitalisation. To fight this, we need more research.

The goal in our 25th year is $25 million – enough to create a new centre of collaboration, bringing world-leading scientists and doctors together to help Australian kids with genetic disease.

You can help by speeding up the search for treatments and cures.

Every dollar raised goes directly to the Children’s Medical Research Institute.

Sign up to raise funds and help fight genetic diseases and other conditions in 2018!

You can also help right now by donating, volunteering or supporting friends who have signed up. Find out more at www.jeansforgenes.org.au

Alid-opens-North-Lakes -August-1-2018

Local residents are set to enjoy high-quality products at permanently low prices and increased employment opportunities when ALDI officially opens the doors to its new format store in North Lakes tomorrow.

From 8.30am on Wednesday 1st August, ALDI North Lakes will provide the community with award-winning grocery products and popular Special Buys, together with fresh fruit, vegetables and bread delivered daily.

ALDI North Lakes will open as a freestanding store for the community, in addition to the existing ALDI North Lakes store located at Westfield North Lakes.

“At ALDI, we are proud to call ourselves “Good Different”. We offer a supermarket experience that is like no other in Australia, and it’s our differences that allow us to bring unbeatable value to our customers every day,” an ALDI spokesperson said.

“We’re excited to be opening our new store in North Lakes and look forward to showing local residents the difference ALDI can make to their wallets and lifestyles.”

The freestanding ALDI North Lakes store features a number of recently introduced innovations that will offer an enhanced shopping experience for customers, with better product displays, improved navigation and a modern interior store design.

New features include redesigned shelving, expanded wooden produce bays, as well as extended energy efficient chillers. As energy management remains a key priority for ALDI, the store has energy efficient LED lighting. There will also be improved point-of-sale displays and store signage.

“While we’re delighted to be introducing these innovations, we want our customers to know they won’t lead to higher prices,” an ALDI Australia spokesperson said. “Low prices are a big deal for ALDI. In fact, we refuse to be beaten on price. This is our fundamental point of difference and one we will never give away.”

For further information on ALDI’s store design, check out our blog ‘Coming to a store near you’, which gives an inside-look at how ALDI stores are designed and built.

To celebrate the opening of the new ALDI North Lakes, there will be a number of unique Special Buys on offer, which will not be available collectively in any other store. ALDI’s Special Buys offer a surprising and unexpected collection of products at unbeatable prices, across a range of categories like skiing, gardening, cooking or entertaining.

Special Buys have become incredibly popular with Australian shoppers and are just one way ALDI distinguishes itself from other supermarkets. They appear in store every Wednesday and Saturday, and customers are given a preview of the products one week before they are in store via ALDI’s catalogue, e-newsletter, app and website.

ALDI North Lakes will be supported by a team of 15-20 permanent full and part-time employees, providing a unique career opportunity in retail. Working conditions at ALDI are considered to be some of the best in the industry with employee benefits including salaries well above market rates, comprehensive training, an employee wellness program, and paid maternity leave.

The new store will be located at 48 North Lakes Drive, North Lakes. Opening hours will be 8:30am-8pm Monday to Friday, 8am-7pm Saturday and 9am-6pm Sunday.

Mango-tree-anzac-avenueA decision around the removal of a number of heritage listed mango trees along the Anzac Avenue corridor for development is still pending.

It remains the decision of Council, however, State authorities do get a say.

Last month, we published an editorial from Mango Hill Progress Association President, Laurence Christie, in relation to this issue and the Association’s thoughts and proposed actions to save the Anzac Avenue Mango Tree Canopy.

The article was published online and posted to the community Facebook page, @northlakesqld. Community outcry was what followed with widespread anger and disbelief that our local heritage could be destroyed without community consultation.

Carrol de la Motte posted, “Do this destructive thing and a floodgate could be opened allowing more desecration of protected areas and items!!!!”

Norma Lopez said, “I can’t believe what they are doing such an amazing place and beautiful Mango trees!! Is there any way to stop it???”

A change.org petition has been started for this cause, to add your signature and make sure your voice is heard, head to – bit.ly/2O6Xm9Y

Helping you Find the Cheapest Fuel

0
FUEL-PRICES-APP-CHRIS-WHITING

A Palaszczuk Government initiative means Queenslanders can see every fuel price changes at every service station on their smartphones within thirty minutes of a price change at the bowser.

The two-year trial will see fuel prices published on existing smartphone apps and websites such as Motormouth, GasBuddy, PetrolSpy, RACQ and Compare the Market.

“We will kick off a two year fuel price reporting trial in December so Queensland motorists will find the cheapest fuel in town,” said Member for Bancroft Chris Whiting.

“All motorist need to do is download these apps or websites onto their smartphones.

“Retailers will have three months’ grace to make sure they are involved in the new scheme.

“By the Easter holidays, offenders will face fines if they do not report their fuel prices accurately and on time.

FUEL-PRICES-APP

“The trial comes on top of the ‘what you see is what you pay’ laws that require retailers to display full prices on their fuel boards,” said Chris Whiting

Chris Whiting said the system would have in-built safeguards against inaccurate or misleading pricing and not inflict unnecessary red tape.

The Palaszczuk Government will evaluate the trial’s performance in 2020.

North Lakes Golf Club Set to Close

0
Roos-at-North-Lakes-Golf-Course

North Lakes Resort Golf Club will close at the end of next year, due to continued financial losses.

Club General Manager Adam Simpson said the privately run business had been operating at a loss in recent years due to a well-documented downturn in golf participation rates.

He said efforts to sell the golf course to another golf operator have been unsuccessful and the bulk of the course land was now set to become public open space.

The course owner is proposing to sell the land to retirement living and aged-care operator The Village Retirement Group. VRG is proposing low-density development on a small section (11 hectares) of the land.

The vast majority of the course – 57 hectares – would be retained for open space, environmental protection and in the longer term there would be the possibility for a range of sport and recreation facilities for community use.

wildlife-on-North-Lakes-Golf-Club

The club will continue to trade at least until late 2019.  Current memberships are being honoured and facilities will be maintained until the closure of the course.

North Lakes Resort Golf Club and VRG are seeking feedback from the community regarding the proposal, prior to the preparation of a development application to Moreton Bay Regional Council.

Information on the proposed project will be presented at a series of community information sessions for club members and the community at the clubhouse.

Where:           North Lakes Resort Golf Club

When:

Saturday 28 July 9.00am 9.30am 10.00am 10.30am 11.00am 11.30am 12.00pm 12.30pm
Tuesday 31 July 5.30pm 6.00pm 6.30pm 7.00pm
Thursday 2 August 5.30pm 6.00pm 6.30pm 7.00pm
Sunday 5 August 11.00am 11.30am 12.00pm 12.30pm 1.00pm 1.30pm

North Lakes residents are encouraged to register for the sessions by emailing northlakes@threeplus.com.au or calling 31671200 during business hours.

Village Retirement Group is proposing to build 200 low-rise independent living units and a three-storey 100-bed aged-care facility on two sites on the golf course land.

The proposal meets a need for ageing in place in North Lakes, with research showing a demonstrated lack of aged-care facilities and of purpose-built retirement living accommodation in the area.

Mr Simpson said the proposal ensured most residents with golf course views would retain green vistas.

“There’s no doubt our members will be disappointed about the golf course closure, but I expect the preservation of this large tract of open space will be welcomed by most in the community,” he said.

Moreton Bay Regional Council is putting out the call for residents, community groups and local businesses to roll up their sleeves and help plant more than 5,000 trees this National Tree Day, July 29.

Lifestyle and Amenity Spokesperson Councillor Denise Sims said across three sites in Moreton Bay, council is looking for volunteers to join conservation officers in the country’s largest community tree-planting event.

The planting kicks off at 9am at:

  • Samford Parklands, Mount Samson Road, Samford Valley;
  • Morris Park, Bigmor Drive, Elimbah; and
  • Halpine Lake Reserve, Jasper Place, Mango Hill.

“Every year, our region’s tree day troops get stuck into it, digging and planting across Moreton Bay  – and we need your help to do it all again in 2018,” Cr Sims said.

Cr-Denise-Sims-National-Tree-Day

In total, volunteers have helped to plant more than 50,000 trees across the region’s parks and reserves, adding to council’s $51.2 million commitment to parks and the environment for 2018/19.

“The event is also a great chance to get advice from council’s environmental and conservation officers about ways you can incorporate native trees at your place.

All tools and equipment will be provided on the day together with refreshments.

“So get together with your family, a group of friends or your colleagues, register, roll up your sleeves, get planting and make a day of it.”

Volunteers are reminded to wear enclosed shoes, long pants, a long-sleeved shirt, a hat and sunscreen.

Gardening Club Sowing the Seeds of Friendship

0
Gardening-Club-Seasons-Kallangur

Seasons-Aged-Care-Kallangur-Gardening-Cub-promotes-friendshipsThe small group of dedicated members of Seasons Kallangur’s gardening club reveal that it’s not just the community’s beautiful gardens that they’ve nurtured over the years, but friendships too.

Walking through Seasons Kallangur’s gates and through to reception, the first thing that catches your eye are the beautiful flowers in the front garden beds.

This work, as well as the rest of the garden beds that form the beautiful views from the lowset apartments and out to the newly landscaped Tranquility Trail, is the work of the Seasons Kallangur’s Garden Club, who meet up weekly each Wednesday afternoon.

The club was the brainchild of Kallangur’s receptionist Karen Houchin who decided to start up the club to get some of the residents who loved gardening together.

“The gardens were getting out of hand so Karen decided we’d try a gardening club so that’s how we got started,” says club member Ellen.

While they all came together for a common cause, their gardening skills and experience varied.

“I’m not a gardener – never was! Even in my own home that I had in Townsville, all the plants got Victor disease … the Victor mower went through everything! But my father was a beautiful gardener and I just like to get outside for a little while and potter around the gardens,” says Ellen.

Others had more experience, with Frank bringing his experience in horticulture to the team.

“I’ve loved gardening all my life, I’ve always had a garden. At one stage after I retired from my job I had a mowing and gardening business and I also studied horticulture so that’s one thing that I love doing,” says Frank.

Each week’s gardening tasks vary and Jenny, who has been a member since she joined the community three years ago, says that she also enjoys getting out in the great outdoors and getting her hands dirty, even if it’s getting harder these days.

“We go from garden to garden – wherever Karen thinks that Wayne (Kallangur’s maintenance man) hasn’t been able to get to weed or whatever. Although all of us are finding it hard to get down to weed but we’re pretty good at lopping! As long as someone can pick up the bits!”

Nell also brought a love of gardening to the team but the weekly meetups have given her so much more.

“I love the garden because I’ve had a garden all my life. I’ve been here 12 months next month and I needed to be out in the garden – as soon as I heard about the garden club I was really pleased. I’m not able to do as much as I’d like these days, but it is my favourite hobby,” says Nell.

“I think it’s the friendship and be able to get out and connect with each other over our love of gardens and flowers that I enjoy most. That’s my main reason anyway – the friendships that I’ve developed since I’ve been here – it’s been really very good.”

Muriel agrees, saying that although keeping on top of the gardens can seem like an endless task it’s great to be out in the outdoors and enjoy the likeminded company.

“It’s a never-ending job and the more people we can get into the garden the better. I’ve always had garden and vegetable gardens so it’s just something that I knew I would enjoy,” says Muriel.

“It’s enjoyable to get out and about – especially when it’s sunny. It’s good company with everybody. Anyone who’s in the garden club enjoys it because of the friendship that’s there and if you like gardening you can see something for your efforts for getting out of your unit and enjoying other people’s company.”
